Halloween Playlist Essentials!

Well being as how Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of all time, and that I love music...I figured that the best thing to do is obviously to tell you all the essentials for an amazing Halloween playlist!! You can go at this a variety of different ways. Some people just put creepy sounding music on, while others may put fun catchy songs that talk about Halloween themes (death, ghosts, the color black, etc.) My own personal playlist for our Halloween party tomorrow night is a combination of these. However, rather than listing all 100+ songs that are on that list, I decided to narrow it down to the best 25-30 (which ended up being much harder!) And here they are, in no particular order:

Best Halloween-themed Movie/TV Songs
  • Theme from "Halloween" by John Carpenter - So creepy. So, so creepy.
  • Theme from "Beetlejuice" by Danny Elfman - Not so much creepy as it is goofy, and it makes me think of how ridiculous Michael Keaton looks in this movie.
  • "This is Halloween" from The Nightmare Before Christmas - Such a great movie, check out the version by Panic at the Disco. Also a close call for this list was "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" (must download version from She Wants Revenge).
  • Theme from "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. - The first song I ever learned to play on the keyboard. Classic.
  • Theme from "The Addams Family" by Vic Mizzy. Also a must is "Addams Family Groove" by M.C. Hammer, just because I said so.
  • "The Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show - The entire soundtrack from this movie would be great for any Halloween function, but this song takes the cake.
  • "I've Put a Spell on You" from Hocus Pocus. Yes. Just, yes.
Songs featuring Halloween themes

  • "Dead!" by My Chemical Romance. More about dying then death and Halloween, but it works for me.
  • "Living Dead Girl" by Rob Zombie. Because who wouldn't want a song about necrophilism on their playlist!
  • "Bat Out of Hell" by Meatloaf. C'mon, it's Meatloaf..why not?
  • "Devil Inside" by INXS. A more upbeat song, but it works.
  • "Boris the Spider" by The Who. A song about a creepy spider sung in a very creepy voice.
  • "Feed My Frankenstein" by Alice Cooper. Ya, that one song from Wayne's World, jam packed with all sorts of creepy sexual inneundo.
  • "Halloween" by the Misfits. Great song that has been covered quite a few times.
  • "The Boogie Monster" by Gnarls Barkley. Because they can make any song sound fantastic.
  • "Hells Bells" by AC/DC. No explanation needed.
  • "I'm Your Boogieman" by Rob Zombie. The only artist on here twice. Because lets be real...he deserves it.
  • "Hell" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This song is quite catchy, and has a fun but creepy beat.
  • "Halloween" by the Dead Kennedys. Not too creepy, and it has NOTHING to do with Halloween...but hey if its in the title!
The Classics
  • "The Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Keepers. It was a graveyard smash!
  • "Purple People Eater" by Ray Stevens. Not too spooky, but some people might be creeped by a one eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater...myself included!
  • "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. Not a person on this planet can hear this song and not think of zombies!
Songs that I think are just essential but don't really talk about Halloween

  • "Maneater" by Hall & Oates. Love this song, and it's here cuz I said so!
  • "Electric Demons" by Electric Six. Demons aren't as scary when they are surrounded by synth pop, but a great song nonetheless.
  • "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse. Or as my boyfriend calls it "that one weird song from Guitar Hero with the horse"
  • "Disturbia" by Rihanna. Disturbia sounds either scary or amazing..but good enough for me.
  • "Into the Void" by Nine Inch Nails. This song is creepy sounding enough.
  • "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt. Yes I realize this song is neither creepy or scary, and has nothing to do with actual spiderwebs. But it's a fantastic song, and people will be saying "oh yah, I get it now!"
  • "Black Cat" by Janet Jackson. Again, probably shouldn't make the list, but your friends will think you are OH so clever.
  • "Hunting for Witches" by Bloc Party. Despite the title this song has nothing to do with Halloween. But it's bad ass.
There are so many more. Satan is my Motor, Highway to Hell..I could go on forever. But armed with these essentials I assure you your Halloween mood will be set perfect!

Please feel free to comment on any songs you dislike, or that you feel I should have included!

Happy Devils Night my friends!

  1. I know some uninformed internet sites out there credit Ray Stevens with singing "Purple People Eater" but in reality Ray has never recorded or performed that song. The credit goes to Sheb Wooley...he's the one who recorded the song. I've listened to sound-clips of the song where sites claim it's Ray Stevens but it isn't him. I'm a big fan of Ray's with a blog site about him so I know what I'm talking about.

As far as Ray is concerned he's recorded a couple of songs with a scary/Halloween overtone. One of them is "Laughing Over My Grave". I did a You Tube montage of that song. There's also "The Booger Man", which I also did a video montage of. A third song from Ray that fits with the Halloween theme is "Sittin' Up With the Dead". Ray did a music video to that song. It can be seen on You Tube as well.
